About
Lovely, dark, and deep, the woods are a complicated space of contemplative beauty and subtle danger. Collectively, the works in this show posit a lightly haunted space, complete with roads not taken, ghosts, fairies and spirits, space for reflection, recovery, and re-wilding.
For some of the artists the woods feature as a favored subject, the artist a happy wanderer, sojourning mystic, or fairy nymph. For others in the group, the woods appear as a mysterious entity, precarious ground, location for study, or retreat for the unquiet mind. With each object, the artist turns over a space, sometimes pastoral or arcadian, sometimes filled with peril, as a kind of cypher for storytelling and making. The woods for each are a kind of staging ground for radical thinking and creativity, a space still outside the cultivated and known.
